Andrew's discussion of the reg/rec probelm, as well as info on installing the PC heat sink fan are available here. I chose to use his HTML as it will allow his instructions to be printed.

Editor's note: An aftermarket reg/rec is available from Electrex USA http://www.electrexusa.com. Site also contains troubleshooting info.

Speedometer drive gear repair

The speedo is driven by a plastic nut that sits on the countershaft retaining bolt. the speedo drive mounts to the outside of the countershaft cover with two 8mm bolts. Remove the sppedo drive and pull out the nut with a pair of needlenose pliers. Inspect the mating surface and you will most likely see that it has been rounded out. You have one of two options. Replace the widget and expect to repair it again in 10 to 20,000 miles or repair it. repairing it requires a dremmel and plumbers putty (puddy?).

1)using the dremmel make four slices (3,6,9 and12 o'clock) in the wall of the innermost plastic circle. clean off all the plastic burs and then clean the widget with contact cleaner.

2) make a ball of putty about 3/4" in diameter and then press as much of it into the widget as possible. Keep adding putty and fashion a small (half marble) shaped mountain on the widget.

3) Coat the "key" on the end of the speedo with vaseline and then (no jokes here) slip it into the putty to make a mold. Leave it that way for a few minutes and then remove. Let the putty dry for several hours and then reinstall. If you find that you used to much putty just file off a little until you have the proper clearence.

If you prefer to replace the nut, it is part number: 44808-MR7-013 and retails for US$6.99

Good Luck finding one. I have been searching for a month and all dealers are out. My dealer is still looking for one to replace the one they broke on my bike a month ago. The part has been discontinued for a couple years now. They seem to be pretty fragile and break easily so I think what stock was left got used up pretty quick. There is a place in the UK that sells aftermarket ones here is the name and URL.

Also, Don Zielke informed me that Cobalt Racing sells reinforced cowls, ready to paint. Call 1-614-983-3358. It's the seat cover cowl, and does not include the bump pad. It's available in fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Lochart Phillips makes one for the VFR, I got one two years ago mail order for about $120. As an FYI if you dont know about it, Honda does make a replacement centerstand for the 90-93 if you have stock exhaust. The part # is: 08M50-MT4-110 Also, I do not think the centerstand will fit a California 90-93.

Editor's note: I have ordered a front and rear stand for my '93 VFR from from Full Spectrun Design, makers of Pit-Bull motorcycle stands. http://www.pit-bull.com I paid $291 for a front (under the triple-clamp style) and rear stand w/ shipping to Oklahoma (they're in AL). I will post my report soon.
